 Week Thirty-Five (4/27/26-5/01/26)

Dear MASH Wildcat Families,

Fridays give me a chance to reflect on the week, and I appreciate you taking a few moments to read this update.

April & May: The Final Stretch

Families often ask what April and May feel like in a high school. I often use the metaphor that we are “landing the airplane” this time of year or the final act in a play — where learning, testing, and events all happen at once. It’s an exciting but demanding time, as students balance academics with activities and begin to feel the pull of summer. With that comes a mix of energy, stress, and important milestones. We’re proud of how our students are navigating this stretch and grateful for the support of our staff and families.

Attendance & Punctuality Update

This week, we also continued our focus on improving punctuality. We’ve seen encouraging progress, with fewer tardies as the week went on and more timely follow-up with students when needed. You may also notice smoother traffic flow during morning drop-off—thank you for your partnership in helping reinforce the importance of arriving on time. Regular attendance and punctuality remain essential, and we will continue to work with students and families when concerns arise.

Student Council Sponsored Cultural Heritage Day (April 27)

Looking ahead, we’re excited for our fourth annual Cultural Heritage Day on Monday, April 27—a highlight of the year that celebrates the diversity and experiences of our students. Student Council will host student-created exhibits, and students will have the opportunity to visit during their period 5 study hall.

Second-Chance Breakfast Update

We also want to share an update on second-chance breakfast. While many students receive our free breakfast at the start of the day, this long-standing option was intended for those who need an additional opportunity to eat. Based on several months of data and conversations, we found it was not being used consistently for that purpose. Beginning Wednesday, April 29, students who genuinely need it will have another system in place to access second-chance breakfast.

AP Exams

Please see our dedicated section below in the newsletter for important information regarding AP Exams.

May Schedule

Finally, here is the link to this week’s newsletter, which included important information about our May 2026 schedule and Keystone exam details.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We hope you have a wonderful weekend.  We appreciate your ongoing partnership and wish you a great weekend.

Sincerely,
Joseph P. Reidy
Principal, MASH

AP Testing May 4-15

AP testing icon

During the weeks of May 4-8 and May 11-15, we will be administering AP exams at MASH. Ms. George and Mrs. Walsh have been sharing exam information with students in their Semester 2 courses.

Additionally, there will be a meeting held on Monday, April 27th during Period 5 in the cafeteria for students who took AP courses in the fall to discuss the upcoming test sessions. Juniors and Seniors who took AP Classes in the Fall will meet in the cafeteria at 9am. Freshmen and Sophomores who took an AP Class in the Fall will report to the cafeteria during IE period at 2:50pm.  Students will be provided with information about when and where to report and what to bring with them to the exams, and they will do a test preview on their chromebooks. All students planning to take an exam should attend to receive the necessary information and help ensure a smooth testing experience!

As you look at the Exams below, please take note that the morning exam slots have a report time of 8am. The afternoon report time is 12pm.  Locations for the exams will be shared with students this coming week.  Teachers will receive communication about our AP Exam students so they are not marked as unlawfully absent from class.

Please remind your child to charge their Chromebook the night before and of course get plenty of rest and eat well the night before and morning of their exam. Thank you!

ATTENDANCE & TARDINESS EXPECTATIONS

ON TIME CHECK MARK

As part of our ongoing efforts to support a positive school environment and maximize student learning, we are placing an increased focus on reducing lost instructional time especially related to students arriving late to class or school.

This is not a new focus for us at MASH, but with the expansion of our building, we have organized student schedules into general zones to support timely transitions.  Students have five minutes between classes, which is sufficient to arrive on time.  While most students meet this expectation, we continue to see the greatest number of tardies occur during arrival to first period.

We shared these updates with students and staff earlier this week as part of our “Community in Action” focus for the month of April where we help students consider how their decisions impact an entire school community.  We also emphasized that punctuality is an important life and workplace skill, and high school is a practice ground for these habits.

Reminder: Students must be in their first block class by 8:20 AM. Students arriving after this time are marked tardy to school.  Excessive unexcused tardies to school may be converted into unexcused absences from school in accordance with attendance guidelines, and families will be notified if this becomes a concern. Every time a student accumulates 220 minutes, it is converted to a half day unlawful absence.  For safety, parent drop-off in the student parking lot is not permitted. All drop-off must occur at the front of the building off Broad Street. We have taken steps to improve traffic flow in this area.

Beginning April 20, we will implement a revised approach to tardiness during the school day. Students who arrive late to class may be assigned a lunch detention, and repeated tardiness will be addressed with additional support and consequences.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
