January 25, 2026

A huge thank you to all the parents who signed up to donate and help stock up our Faculty Room with such great supplies! We really appreciate everything you do to help our staff. Thank you!

Weather update: If we have a snow day tomorrow, it will be a traditional snow day. There will be no remote learning expectations, and no make-up day will be required, as the first three snow days are built into the 25-26 school calendar. Traditional snow days do not count toward the cycle, so the next day we are in school will be Day 4.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Letters regarding parent/teacher conference went home with your student last week. Teachers will hold conferences February 12, 2026 from 11:15am - 6:00pm. This is an early dismissal for grades K-5. Shep students will dismiss at 10:45am (NOTE: Lunch will NOT be served.)

Mid-year conferences are an opportunity to connect with families whose child may need additional support academically, socially or behaviorally. If your child's teacher is not requesting a conference, you can request one to discuss your child's progress.

Here is a link to our Shep conference sign up.

Deadline to schedule your conference is January 30, 2026

New Lobby Drop-Off Spot for Items

To make things easier and keep our students safe, we now have a special spot in the outer vestibule for parents to drop off forgotten items like lunch boxes, water bottles, or extra clothing.

Simply place items on the gray shelf in the vestibule, and our team will make sure they get to your child quickly. This helps us limit extra traffic in the main office while still making sure your student has what they need for a successful day!

Specialist Corner: Music

From our music teacher, Miss O'Donnell:

1st grade - This month, first grade is learning about partner songs. Partner songs are two songs that create harmony when they are sung at the same time. Harmony is multiple notes that have a pleasing effect.

2nd grade – We have continued to practice rhythms – the long and short sounds in music. We are starting to recognize the rhythm notation. Rhythm notation is what the rhythm symbols look like.

3rd grade – Third grade is just getting their recorders at the end of January. We have learned rest, chin, and play positions and are practicing using gentle air to make a musical sound. Pretty soon we will be ready to start playing songs with Recorder Karate.

Miss Cerio’s Class - We have been practicing the steady beat with a hand jive called "Double Double”.

Smart Watch Policy Reminder

Below is the smart watch policy from our Elementary Handbook:

Students are permitted to wear smart watches to school. It shall not be used during the school day for playing games or communicating, including sending or receiving texts.

Any student who needs to communicate with parents/guardians during school hours should ask to use the phone in the main office. Parents needing to contact their child must call the school office rather than texting their child on their smart watch.

If the device is used during the school day contrary to the directives of school staff, it will be confiscated by school personnel and disciplinary consequences will be given. Refusal to submit the device to school personnel is an issue of insubordination and will result in additional consequences.

The device will be returned ONLY to a parent or guardian after disciplinary consequences have been served.

Cold Weather and Recess Time

Cold weather has definitely arrived! Here are some reminders about our winter weather and recess procedures:

Outdoor Recess: Students will go outside for recess most days to enjoy fresh air and a movement break. Please make sure your child comes to school with a warm coat, hat and mittens or gloves.

Cold Weather Guidelines: If temperatures are especially low or there are weather advisories, an announcement will be made about recess being inside. Decisions will prioritize student safety.

Thank you for helping us ensure our students stay safe, warm and ready to play during the upcoming winter months.
