MMS News and Notes

MMS Parents and Guardians,

Happy Fist Bump Friday!  We had an absolute blast at our annual Dodgeball for Hunger event! The energy, teamwork, and community spirit on display were incredible. Thanks to your generosity and support, we raised just under $6,000 to purchase food for our MMS Marketplace, which helps provide students and families with much-needed food for the weekends. This event truly captures the heart of what makes our Wildcat community so special—thank you!

Upcoming Dates & Reminders:

  • End of 1st Marking Period – October 23
It’s hard to believe we’re already approaching the end of the first marking period! Please take a few minutes to check in with your child about grades, missing assignments, and upcoming assessments.

  • Fall Break – No School for Students (October 24–27)
School will be closed for students from Friday, October 24 through Monday, October 27 for Fall Break. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved long weekend to rest, recharge, and spend time with family and friends.

  • Cooler Weather Reminder
With temperatures beginning to drop, please remind your child to dress appropriately for the weather. We continue to make every effort to give our students some fresh air and outdoor time during their lunch period, as long as conditions allow.

Heroes in Our Halls

Heroes in Our Halls – November 7th 8:30–9:30 a.m.

MMS is proud to host Heroes in Our Halls on Friday, November 7th from 8:30–9:30 a.m., a special event to honor the veterans in our Wildcat families. The event will include a walk through our first-floor halls, followed by a brief ceremony in the cafeteria where families can enjoy time together, a sweet treat, and thoughtful words of gratitude.

Veterans who would like to walk alongside their student during Heroes in Our Halls are invited to register using our Google Form. Or to honor a family member who served in the military, families should use the same Google Form to share the veteran's name so we can recognize them during Heroes in Our Halls.  Deadline to register is 10/29/2025.

Counseling Corner

Hello MMS families,

It’s hard to believe we’re already wrapping up the first marking period! This is a great time to check in with your student about their academic progress, celebrate their efforts, and help them set goals for the next marking period.

Check Grades & Stay Informed
You can stay up to date on assignments, grades, and attendance by logging into Sapphire. Regular check-ins can help students stay accountable and reduce the chance of surprises when report cards are released. Sapphire Parent User Guide

If you haven’t already, ask your student to walk you through their Google Classroom too. You’ll get a glimpse of upcoming assignments, class announcements, and how they’re organizing their school work. Google Classroom Parent Guide

Test-Taking Tips & Managing Anxiety
As we move into a busy season of assessments, it’s completely normal for students to feel some test stress. A little bit of nervous energy can sometimes help improve focus, but too much can be overwhelming.

Here are a few simple strategies to help your student feel more prepared and confident:

Before the Test:
Review in short sessions over several days rather than cramming the night before.
Use practice quizzes or flashcards to reinforce key ideas.
Get a good night’s sleep and eat a balanced breakfast the morning of the test.

During the Test:
Encourage students to read directions carefully and pace themselves.
Remind them to breathe deeply if they start to feel overwhelmed.
Teach them to skip and return to tricky questions instead of getting stuck.

After the Test:
Celebrate effort, not just outcomes.
Help them reflect: What worked well? What could they try differently next time?

And most importantly, reassure your child that one test doesn’t define them. Their progress, character, and work ethic matter just as much as their score.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about your student’s progress or need support navigating the school year. We’re here to help your child feel confident, cared for, and capable of growth, no matter where they’re starting from.

Warm regards,

Health Room News

This month we acknowledged Global Handwashing Day on October 15th on Wildcat TV. Global Handwashing Day reminds us how important it is to wash our hands with soap and water. Washing your hands is the single most important way we can stop germs from spreading and help keep you and the people around you healthy.

Think about all the things you touch every day—doorknobs, phones, and even your food. Germs from your hands can transfer on those surfaces. But washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, about the time it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice, can get rid of those germs.  If you don’t have access to a sink, use hand sanitizer, which can be found in all classrooms and the cafeteria.

Let’s all remember to wash up regularly, especially before eating and after using the restroom. It’s a simple step that makes a big difference in keeping everyone safe and healthy.

Reminders:

7th Grade:  Dental exams are due. Dental exams during your student's 6th or 7th grade years will be accepted.

6th Grade: Physical exams are due. Physical exams during your student's 5th or 6th grade years will be accepted. Please send dental or physical exams to school with your student or upload to Sapphire.

Medications in school:  If your student needs to take any prescription medication during the school day, we will need a written physician order and the medication in the original bottle with the pharmacy label attached.

If your student has emergency medication for seizures, asthma or allergies, the required forms can be found here, along with the medication, along with the medication policy: https://mechanicsburgasdpa.sites.thrillshare.com/o/masd/page/health-forms

If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s health, please contact the health room at (717) 691-2454, or email Mrs. Kessler skessler@mbgsd.org, or Mrs. Kresge jkresge@mbgsd.org. Thank you for helping us to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Friday Night Football Games Reminders

  • Student Entrance & ID: All Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School students should enter through the new student entrance to the right of the main gate, nearest the restrooms. Please have your MASD student ID ready—or show your student profile on Sapphire from your phone—for quick admittance. K-8 students should enter through the regular gate with their supervising adult.

  • Bag Policy: Students are not permitted to bring backpacks and drawstring bags into the stadium. A small clutch or purse for personal items is permitted.

  • Younger Student Supervision: Elementary and middle school students must be with a supervising adult upon entry and at all times throughout the game.

  • Student Expectations: Students are encouraged to enjoy the game alongside their supervising adult. Congregating in groups at the gates, concession stand, restrooms, or grassy areas won’t be allowed. Staff and security will kindly redirect students back to their supervising adult if needed.

  • School Function Reminder: Athletic events are considered school functions, so the same behavioral expectations apply as during the school day. We hope all students will be there to cheer on our athletes, color guard, and marching band!

Thank you for helping us create a fun, spirited, and safe game-day atmosphere for our Wildcat community. We can’t wait to see you this Friday and all season long.

 Go Wildcats!

Cell Phones & Electronic Devices

To help maintain a safe, respectful, and distraction-free environment—especially in areas with less supervision like restrooms—we are updating our cell phone procedures this year. All student cell phones must be turned off and kept inside backpacks throughout the entire school day. Phones should not be carried on the student’s person, visible, or used at any time during school hours.

If a student is found with a phone out, in use, visible, or simply on during the school day, it will be collected by school staff.

  • First offense: The phone will be housed in the main office and returned to the student at the end of the day.

  • Additional offenses: The phone will be housed in the main office and must be picked up by a parent or guardian. Additional disciplinary actions may also apply.

We understand you may have concerns regarding your ability to communicate important information to your child. If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, they are welcome to use the phone in the main office. Likewise, if you need to get a message to your child, our office staff will make sure they receive it promptly.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work together to create a safe and focused learning environment for all students.

New Attendance Notification System

We’re excited to announce that MMS has been selected to pilot the district’s new Attendance Automated Notification System!

What this means for you:

1.    Report absences by email only. Please send notice of your student’s absence to mmsattendance@mbgsd.org. (Phone calls are not required.)

2.    By 9:30 AM: If we have not received an email, or if you only call without emailing, your student’s absence will be marked unlawful and an automatic attendance message will be sent via text, email and phone call.

3.    During the transition: If you receive an absence notification but your student is actually present, please call the office at (717) 691-2452 to clear it up.

We appreciate your patience as this new system is rolled out districtwide. Our goal is a smooth and seamless transition.
