External Programs MASH Juniors and Seniors for 2026-2027 School Year

Introduction

MASH continues to strive to create a senior year experience that more closely resembles the next stop on your child's educational journey. As a result of these efforts, we are pleased to be able to continue to offer a variety of programs, many of them through our external partners. Many of these opportunities are senior specific, while others are options that may be relevant for juniors as well. Either way, we encourage you to use this resource as a tool looking ahead towards senior year, to ensure the programming you select puts you in the best position to reach your future goals.

In an effort to assist parents with this aspect of our programming, we have invited our external partners (representing the programming below) to be a part of our Semester 2 Back to School Night program coming up on Wednesday, January 28. We invite you to come to MASH prior to the visitation of teachers. Our partners will be be available at 6:00pm.Whether you were planning to attend the Back to School Night event or not, you are welcome to come to MASH to meet with our external partners. We expect approximately 10 of our external partners to be on site that evening to engage with parents and answer questions that you might have. No appointment is necessary, please stop by MASH and get the information you need to help guide your child as they prepare to wrap up their MASH experience and look towards a world beyond our walls.

External Program Offerings

Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment is when a student earns credit at MASH and at an accredited institution of higher education for the same course. Thus they dually earn high school graduation credit and begin to accrue college credits simultaneously. These classes may be on campus or they may be online. That depends upon the institution of higher education as well as the courses desired.

MASD has long offered dual enrollment as a possible addition to students' building-based programming. In recent years, higher education institutions have worked to make this aspect of their programming available to more students. Additionally, many families have found that the reduced rate for tuition for high school students who are dually enrolled is beneficial in offsetting the cost of higher education.

At MASH the semester based schedule makes it easier for students to create a blended schedule of building based and dual enrollment courses. Additionally, through the College In the High School model, some students can receive college credit for courses they take at MASH.

Finally, and as importantly, students can select courses via dual enrollment that may not be offered at MASH. (This information is aligned with MASD Policy #241)

At present we have dual enrollment agreements:

· Dickinson College

· Harrisburg Area Community College

· Harrisburg University

· Messiah University

· Millersville University

· Shippensburg University

- Penn West University

Additional Information, including a Frequently Asked Questions document, is provided on the

MASH Counseling Website.

College In the HS (Also Dual Enrollment Credits)

College in the High School is a form of dual enrollment in which the class is held at the high school, taught by MASH teachers who have been approved by the institution of higher education to teach / grade the course. Students receive MASD and college credit for these courses.

At this time we anticipate AP Language & Composition, AP Statistics, Capstone Communications (Level I) and Mechanical Drawing to each be offered in this format during 2026-2027. Once students are enrolled in the course via the MASH scheduling process, more information will be shared for those students who choose to pursue the accompanying college credit. Our current arrangements for CiHS include Harrisburg University and HACC.

Workforce Development (Certification Programs/Dual Enrollment)

We continue to work with HACC, Harrisburg University and industry to offer programming that suits students who wish to obtain entry level preparation and certifications connected to the health care industry and manufacturing (OSHA certifications).

At present for the 2026-2027 eligible MASH students may enroll in:

 · HACC EMT certificate program

· HACC STEP program (WorkKeys; OSHA; CPR certifications)

· HACC Welding

*These experiences include a mixture of industry-recognized credentials and dual enrollment credit.

Internships

MASH Seniors, in working with the Careers Office, may work to design an internship experience worth 1 credit for 1 semester. Students wishing to complete a longer internship or multiple internships (one each semester) should consult with their counselor and the Careers Office to gauge if that is a possibility.

This course is intended to give seniors who have specific career-related interests an opportunity to explore those interests in a real world environment. Students work with a mentor to learn about a particular industry or occupation. Workplace activities may include special projects, a sample of tasks from different jobs, or tasks from a single occupation. These may or may not include financial compensation. The employer and the School to Career Coordinator evaluate the student through a workplace evaluation and career seminar assignments. The duration of this course may range from 1-2 periods for a semester or a school year, dependent upon the mentor availability and the students’ schedules. Students must complete the Senior Internship application and have completed one job shadow in the career area of choice.

Work Co-Operative

Cooperative Education enables students to gain occupational instruction through learning on the job (work-based learning component) in a career area of choice. Emphasis is placed on the students’ education and employability skills. Students must complete the Cooperative Education application to be considered for this program. Cooperative Education worksites must be approved by the School to Career Coordinator.

Programs for MASH Students considering careers in the Field of Education

Educators for Tomorrow (Messiah University / MASD) Dual Enrollment + Internship

Does your future involve leading a classroom? Are you ready to take the plunge with beginning to build towards this career avenue? If so, this program is for you.

In this program, MASH students will complete a school-based internship one semester and have the opportunity to complete two Messiah University education-specific courses. The education-specific courses that are a part of this program are EDUC 203 Educational Psychology and EDUC 209 Principles and Structures of Mathematics. Additionally students in this program will be invited to events on Messiah University’s campus, which will provide opportunities to engage with current education majors, faculty and/or alums who are professionals in the field of education.

The School Based Experience (Internship) will be worth 1 credit and last one semester. Each student will select their desired level of placement (K-8 within MASD, 9-12 is not an option in this program). MASH students in this program will become a part of the regular classroom community for the classroom to which they are assigned. MASH students will visit this classroom at the designated time each day (typically the same time each day). Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from their placement school.

Students interested in this opportunity will hear from your counselor who will work with you in regard to time of day, semester, etc. with respect to your program

Elmwood Mentor / Educator Exploration Program

Have you thought about becoming a teacher but are not quite sure? Could you envision yourself serving as athletic coach, summer camp counselor, or working with elementary students or youth in some capacity? Are you willing to dip your toes in the waters of education to see how you’d like it? If so, then perhaps this program is for you. This program occurs during the school day and is worth one credit for one semester, as is the case with most MASH internships.

Students selecting this internship option will go to Elmwood Academy 4-5 times per week for a variety of experiences. One day you could be assisting on the playground and the next day you could be helping a teacher work with small groups in their classroom. You might find yourself one week in a 4th grade classroom and the next week helping the PE teacher.

Students in this program will work with the program coordinator at Elmwood to select options to contribute to the school day and school year development of our 4th and 5th grade Wildcats. As students continue exploring throughout the program, they will work with the Elmwood program coordinator to either maintain a variety of experiences or begin to narrow the focus of their contributions.

The ultimate goal is for the MASH student to contribute to the Elmwood community while growing their own skills and developing their ability to see things from many different perspectives. This is a one semester placement and students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Elmwood Academy.

Students selecting this opportunity should indicate internship (Elmwood Mentor) on their course selection sheet.

Design Your Own Course

The Design Your Own Course is a semester length, one-credit course intended for seniors who have a particular interest he/she may want to explore. Design Your Own Course falls within MASH’s “Alternative Pathways to Graduation” program. It is a self- directed course for responsible and eager seniors to – with the aid of a faculty mentor – explore a field, research a topic and /or to produce some kind of final product in an area of particular interest, hopefully one that may fuel a future career or valuable skill set.

Students will meet with their mentor regularly, and it is possible that they would also meet with other students working on a project to share and reflect. At the end of the semester, students will likely be asked to share their findings with a panel of MASH faculty members. The Design Your Own Course offers boundless opportunities but requires a great deal of self-discipline. The Design Your Own Course should be connected to one of the four core content areas: English, Math, Science, or Social Studies. Building administration coordinates the program along with a counselor who helps facilitate the beginning and end of the Course, but the real work is done between the mentor and student, with the responsibility for the project’s fulfillment ultimately falling on the student.

Applications are available from counselors and, upon review, will be approved, disapproved, or asked to be reworked. Once an application is approved, student, parent, and mentor will draft and sign a contract and begin at the beginning of the semester.
