January 2026

Happy New Year!   As we flip the page on the calendar to 2026, we can look forward with excitement about a return to school.  We are grateful for a winter break that provided an opportunity to refresh and recharge; however, there remains much to do to achieve our goals for the 2025-2026 school year for our students and staff.  On Monday, January 5th, we will hold a morning assembly with students to revisit our expectations for following the Wildcat Way with a Community meeting to follow on Thursday, January 8th to set forth our goals for the month and celebration of Power Pay recipients for the month of December.  Mid-year benchmark assessments will occur this month to see how students are progressing toward academic goals in reading and mathematics.

Our students continue to demonstrate expected behavior and hard work, earning a Glow Party for filling up the building mini paw jar.  This will occur during our first week back from break.  I continue to be impressed with what our students are achieving both in and out of the classroom.  Our staff’s purposeful planning and support provide the opportunity for student success and your support from home reinforces the goals of our learning community.  Please continue to ask your child what they learned, how they were a friend, or how they were a leader in school.  These conversations are an investment in the value of their education as well as a reminder to their role as a member of our community.

A few reminders to all for the purpose of student safety.  Student drop-off occurs from 7:30 AM - 7:45 AM. During this time period staff is outside and available to help your child get out of the car and into the building. Please do not drive around the cones when dropping off your child.  Your child is considered on-time if they arrive during this time frame. If you arrive after 7:45 AM, students are considered tardy (late) and will need to be signed in by a parent. I recognize some mornings are challenging to get out of the door on-time, but arriving after 7:45 AM regularly will result in you getting an attendance letter. Reach out if you need support in getting your child to school on-time.

Thank you again for your support of our learning community.

Amazing Americans

January 2026 will be the start of our 5th annual "Amazing Americans" focus at Broad Street. Each year, students have the opportunity to learn about Americans of various backgrounds and ethnicities who accomplished amazing feats in our country. Each grade level will learn about different individuals in the weekly focuses of artists & musicians, writers & inventors, politicians & activists, athletes, pilots, astronauts, mathematicians & scientists and beyond. They will engage with online resources and books to learn about the lives of these special people.

Ask your child which Amazing American they learned about each week from January 21-February 27.

Emergency Drills - Advance Notification

Dear Parents/Guardians,

MASD schools practice secure in place and/or lockdown procedures when conducting a security drill. Schools are required to conduct one emergency drill within the first 90 calendar days of the school year in place of a fire drill and a second security drill during the second semester.

Broad Street Elementary will be conducting emergency drills following these guidelines throughout the year. If you have specific questions about these drills, please consult the student handbook.

Message to Families: Attendance in Sapphire

Dear Wildcat Families,

We’re happy to share a helpful update to Sapphire’s Parent Portal. You can now view your child’s current attendance records and their state assessment scores—all in one convenient place.

  • Select the student you’d like to view
  • Navigate to the “My Backpack” section to see the new “Attendance” and “Assessment Scores” areas (PSSA, Keystone, etc.)

If you have any questions about what you see in the portal, please reach out to your child’s school office.

School Counselor

Lessons

Students will be learning about goal-setting during January’s school counseling lessons. We will practice choosing meaningful goals, breaking them into manageable steps, and building the confidence to keep trying even when challenges come up. Families can support this learning at home by talking with children about their goals and celebrating their progress throughout the month.As a school we will also be learning about Amazing Americans from different backgrounds and with different skills who achieved their goals to make the world a better place.

Groups and Lunches

I am looking forward to continuing to meet with new students throughout the year and will start my next round of small groups in February. Birthday lunches for January will be held on January 22nd, New Student lunches will be on January 13th, and Lunch Bunch will be offered on January 23rd.

As always, please feel free to reach out with questions! lmandia@mbgsd.org  717-691-3328

Health Room News

Mobile Dentist

Attention Parents/Guardians,

Our schools have partnered with Smile Programs to offer in-school dental care through a mobile dentist service. As a reminder, all students are required by the state to have dental exams completed and submitted to the school nurse for Kindergarten or 1st grade and for 3rd grade. If your child does not have a regular dentist and has not had a dental exam yet, please consider utilizing this optional program. The dental care is usually at no cost to you. Most insurances are accepted, including Medicaid. For those without insurance, a low-cost self-pay option is available, and a grant program is also available for free service to those who qualify.

Our in-school dental program saves you time and provides a safe and comfortable place for your child to receive gentle dental care from licensed local professionals. Dental care includes a dental exam and may include x-rays, cleaning, fluoride, and sealants when necessary, and in some cases restorative care, such as fillings.

Children who see a dentist regularly may have fewer health issues like:

     *  Early tooth loss caused by dental decay
     *  Gum disease
     *  Heart disease
     *  Impaired speech development

Help keep your child healthy, in school, and learning!

If you are interested in having your child seen by the mobile dentist, please register using the link below or complete a paper registration form and return it to the school nurse. Paper permission slips/registrations are due back to the school nurses by February 12, 2026.
