It is said that "time flies when you are having fun!" It sure has been a "blink" and we are now entering the month of December. Our students continue to be actively engaged as a part of our school learning community. Teachers are doing an outstanding job in supporting the individual learning needs of students while fostering their development as citizens at Broad Street Elementary. Our new CKLA (Curriculum Knowledge Language Arts) is engaging students by providing relevance and rigor to our English Language Arts curriculum. The Everyday Mathematics program continues to grow our learners in the understanding of math facts and fluency. Each day, students are engaged in their learning and it is exciting to see the moments when prior knowledge is connected to new skills and concept. This is when true learning occurs.
Students are following the Wildcat Way daily and earning both individual and building-based incentives. We recently celebrated the reward of "ice cream at lunch". It was indeed a "treat" to see all students benefit from collaborative and collective efforts as together, everyone can achieve more. Embracing this collective responsibility helps build community and reinforce the fact that no one is alone here at Broad Street. The community service efforts continue with our Student Ambassadors and our Girls on the Run teams, serving as evidence of great things happening in our learning community, where all stakeholders have the opportunity to belong. Student Ambassadors supported Operation Wildcat projects Pennies for Pies and Project Thanksgiving drives collecting over 45 pounds of coins equating to $312.01 and a full table of food for families in need within our community. Girls on the Run did a community service project writing motivational notes to distribute to runners at their recent 5K event at Harrisburg Area Community College. Examples of leadership; examples of empathy; evidence that our future community will be strong.
The virtual Broad Street Spirit Wear store is once again open for those wishing to secure Broad Street "swag" for holiday gifts or for personal use. Items in our store are sold at cost as this is not a fundraiser, rather a service to our learning community. The store will remain open through Friday, December 5, 2025. Items can be shipped to you directly at the cost of shipping or you can select a free option for the items to be available for pick up at the front office on December 22, 2025. Please visit our virtual store to get your Broad Street apparel.
Please continue to ask your child what they learned, how they were a friend, or how they were a leader in school. These conversations are an investment in the value of their education as well as a reminder to their role as a member of our community.
The month of December will have many opportunities for us to come together for special events and celebrations. Parents are always invited to volunteer or visit Broad Street as a support for learning in the classroom, grade level, or building based activities. If you are interested in volunteering or visiting, please contact your child’s teacher.
Thank you again for your support of our learning community.

In the month of November we served others in our community by:
Collecting Pennies for Pies for Operation Wildcat - this year we collected 45 pounds of coins, and met our goal! This money goes towards purchasing pies for Operation Wildcats Project Thanksgiving.
Collecting food for Operation Wildcat's Project Thanksgiving. We collected a LOT of items of food!
Way to go Wildcats!

Since October 6th, we have been using the new Attendance Auto Notification System, and it has been going well.
What this means for you:
Report absences by email only. Please send notice of your student’s absence to broadstreetoffice@mbgsd.org. (Phone calls are not required.)
By 8:15 AM: If we have not received an email, or if you only call without emailing, your student’s absence will be marked unlawful and an automatic attendance message will be sent via text, email, and phone call.
If you receive an absence notification but your student is actually present, please call the office at 717-691-4574 to clear it up.
Note: Illness, quarantine or death are the only excuses accepted by the state. A doctor’s excuse must be submitted for an absence of three (3) or more school days.
🛫 🚅 🚗 Traveling to Grandma’s? Going on Vacation? — An Educational Trip request form can be submitted at least five (5) days in advance, call the office for details, (717) 691-4574 or access parent forms from our website HERE

Lessons
My classroom lessons for December will focus on perspective-taking and the concept of empathy when it comes to being a good friend. We will talk about the importance of being a good friend in order to have good friends. I will explain empathy as "stepping into someone else's shoes" or feeling how someone else feels. We will also be will be making cards to distribute to local retirement communities to spread some cheer. We will also talk about gratitude and being grateful for what we have in our lives. Try talking with your student about what you are grateful for to encourage them to take on an attitude of gratitude.
Groups and Lunches
My small counseling groups have wrapped up for the semester. It has been a gift to watch students grow in their knowledge and social skills. I am looking forward to continuing to meet with new students throughout the year and will start my next round of small groups in the new year. Birthday lunches for December will be held on December 18th, New Student lunches will be on December 16th, and Lunch Bunch will be offered on December 5th.
As always, please feel free to reach out with questions! lmandia@mbgsd.org 717-691-3328

We congratulate our latest PTO president Katie Dang for her recent election to the Mechanicsburg School Board. As a result of her election, she is stepping down as the President of Broad Street PTO after multiple years of service including the last two leading in the president's chair. As a result of the vacancy, Jason Rodgers will be assuming the role of President from Vice President. We also had a change at Secretary and now Sara Martin is our Secretary. With these changes, the Vice President position on the School Board remains vacant. If you are interested in joining the PTO, please contact a member of the current PTO or join our next meeting. We also have a common email address of BroadStMechPTO@gmail.com. |
